When you imagine the Alps, you likely get mental pictures of powdery snow and white for as far as the eye can see. Maybe you think of a nice, cold beer or a warm, inviting cup of cocoa. In fact, if you said these mountains come to life “with the sound of music” — you wouldn’t be lying. The Asitz Mountains, part of the Leogang range and the Eastern Alps, is quite possibly the most enigmatic. Salzburg especially is known for its arts, creativity, culture, and most of all, their love of music.
In fact, there’s just something about the area that puts music in your heart. The city is Mozart’s birthplace. Classical music is center stage in Salzburg. But, if you were to venture out a little, you’ll find lakes, mountain peaks stark against a bright blue sky, and an overall slower paced life in the towns surrounding Salzburg.
Residents have a long cultural history coursing through their veins. So, it’s no surprise this passion reaches high up into the mountain villages. From late March through early October, the Asitz mountains truly come to life with cultural venues. It’s the perfect place to experience nature without having to spend hours hiking just to catch a glimpse.
In the Asitz, there are two lakes. The upper lake is best viewed at Heights Point — it appears as if the lake is suspended mid-cloud. The lower lake is crystal clear and is a fabulous place to just sit and contemplate life. There are several pieces of wooden art and plentiful seating.
